How Much is Sassa Child Grant?

The Set Sassa child Grant amount is “R530 per child per month” and a certain increase is officially announced. In Addition to this (if applicable) from April 2023 onwards, the top-up amount per child is set for R250 each month. Then the total amount becomes R750 for each child support grant.

Increase in Child Grant Payments

The Sassa Child grant was increased from R510 to R530 per child per month and furtherly it is expected to increase by R10 from April 2024.

Eligibility Criteria For Sassa Child Grant

To be eligible for sassa child support grant the child and applicant both must comply with the eligibility criteria. The following are the key points of eligibility.

  • The primary caregiver should be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognized refugee.
  • The applicant and the child both should be residents Of the state of South Africa.
  • The applicant must be the primary caregiver of the child/ children concerned.
  • The child/children must be under the age of 18 years
  • The applicant and his/her spouse must clear the sassa means test.
  • Caregivers can not apply for more than six non-biological children.
  • Child/Children must live with the primary caregiver who is not paid to look after the child.
  • Child/children must not reside in an institution funded or cared for by the state of South Africa. 
  • It is preferable to exhibit a South African ID document of the applicant as well as the residentiary proof. 
  • The death certificate of the parent if the applicant is the nearest relative ( grandfather, cousin, aunt, etc) as a caregiver.

  • The applicant’s South African 13-digit ID document, in case it is not available then:
  • Ask the Sassa Officer to provide you with an Affidavit form or you can download Sassa Affidavit Form from our website, fill this form on the SASSA standard affidavit template, and make sure that the Oath commissioner is present at that time. The Oath Commissioner must not be affiliated with SASSA.
  • You are required to present a statement of declaration which declares your truth, this should be attested by an authoritative person. 
  • You are required to give your fingerprint while your application is under a verification process. The Department of Home Affairs will issue your ID on your request if you fail to present your ID to SASSA your application may be suspended by Sassa.
  • For child’s verification, you must need the following documents.
  • A declaration attested by a community counselor by a traditional leader or licensed social worker, a recognized religious leader, or a school principal who can verify you and the child’s status.
  • You should have a receipt from the Department of Home Affairs if you have initiated an application for an ID and/or birth certificate of the child.
  • Baptismal certificate.
  • A school certificate where required.
  • Road to Health Clinic (RTHC).
  • If you are not the child’s parent, you must exhibit documentary proof that declares that you are the child’s primary caregiver. This can be through an affidavit from police officials, or from any social worker, as well as an affidavit from the biological parent, or a letter from the child’s school.
  • If you are married, you will need to provide proof of your marriage.
  • Proof of your divorce in case you are divorced

  • If you are divorced, the “court order must show that you have legal custody of the child.

How To Apply For Sassa Child Grant In 2024?

Sassa child grant application process is as simple as other grants by SASSA. Follow below the steps to apply accurately.

Step 1

You can apply for the grant by visiting your nearest sassa office or you may apply online by following the instructions on their services website.

Don’t worry if you find it hard to fill the form by yourself, ask the sassa officer to help you with this. They will fill that form for you. Follow their instructions and provide the information they inquire about. Attach all relevant documents with the application form.

Step 2

Once you are done with the application form, the Sassa officer will conduct an interview and after that, they will give you a receipt and you are required to keep that receipt safe with you.

Verification Process

Normally it takes 3 months to process your application but still, it depends on the number of applications submitted. After 3 months either your grant will be approved or disapproved. If it is disapproved you can go for SASSA appeal.

SASSA Child Grant Means Test

Sassa Means test should be cleared in order to fair distribution of grants. It is conducted to identify whether. the applicant is eligible for a grant or not.

The income threshold for the applicant (Primary Caregiver) in case of unmarried is R60,000, and if he/she is married then both spouses’ collective income should not exceed the amount of R 1,20,000.

What If the Application Not Approved?

When your application is rejected or not approved they must have given you the reason with results. If you believe it is unfair or an error to you, you have the right of reconsideration of your application, If again it is rejected then you should go for appeal. This matter will be examined by higher authorities. And if they think you are eligible for a child support grant you will be given your grant payments from then onwards. But if appeal is also denied you will be given the explanation for that.

Remember! The time limitation for appeal is 90 days you must have to file an appeal within the first 90 days of your rejection. Say for instance this 90 day period has passed and you did not file an appeal still you have the option to file an appeal but it is not reliable may be they won’t consider it.
